Manual résumé screening may be manageable when a company receives a small number of applications.
At enterprise hiring volumes, the equation changes considerably.

But, a recruiter reviewing 30 applications can afford to spend significant time on every profile. A recruiter dealing with hundreds or thousands of applications across several open positions cannot realistically give every résumé the same level of attention.
A Ladders eye-tracking study found that recruiters spent an average of just 7.4 seconds on their initial scan of a résumé. The research tracked how professional recruiters visually reviewed résumés and found that recruiters frequently skimmed for information such as job titles, dates, keywords, and layout before deciding where to focus additional attention.

While the research should not be treated as a universal measure of how long every recruiter spends on every résumé today, it highlights an important problem – when recruiters have limited time and high application volumes, potentially qualified candidates can be overlooked during an initial manual review.
